Sometimes, basic is better. You don’t always need something too high-tech or over the top. And nothing does it quite like the AvidCard CAC USB Smart Card Reader.

It’s so beautifully designed in its simplicity. There’s just something elegant about it. And yes, we’re talking about a CAC reader. But it’s got more an just a killer aesthetic vibe. It functions great.

AvidCard-Type-A-Connector

The AvidCard is compatible with almost all operating systems including:

  • Windows 7/8/10
  • MacOS 10.9-13
  • Windows Server 2008/2012/2016/2019
  • Windows CE 6.0/7.0
  • Linux
  • Android 4.0 and Later

 

 

The only thing not supported is iOS which could be a deal breaker for Apple fans. Fortunately, we keep an old Android hanging around the office for instances just like this.

However, it does support all major smart card platforms.

The AvidCard CAC reader also meets full compliance with all industry standards such as ISO/IEC 7816, PC/SC, and USB CCID. And it can handle transactions quickly and efficiently at speeds up to 600 kbps.

And for all its computing and transfer power, it’s relatively affordable.

Pros and Cons of the AvidCard CAC USB Smart Card Reader

As far as basic smart card readers go, the AvidCard USB Smart Card reader has a bunch of great features.

  • Work flawlessly will all contact smart cards
  • Full compliance to EMV 2011 and GSA FIPS 201 to provide additional protection and security

  • Affordable

Cons:

Not compatible with iOS

Final Thoughts on the AvidCard USB CAC Smart Card Reader

While this isn’t the most advanced CAC Card reader we’ve seen, it gets the job done. It’s like going back to fundamentals. It accomplishes the basic functions a CAC reader should–and stylishly at that.

Are we bummed out it doesn’t support iOS? Sure. But if you don’t need to access your CAC Card from your phone, then there’s nothing to be bothered about.
