What if there was a way you could turn your iPhone into a CAC reader? It’d be pretty convenient that’s for sure.
And that’s exactly what the iAuthenticate 2.0 with SubRosa Middleware for OtterBox uniVERSE Case can do for you! It’s unique design allows you plug it right onto the back of your iPhone without causing harm or damage to your CAC or phone. So, we figured we hook it up and see what it could do.
We weren’t too worried about the quality up front. It’s a collaboration by Identiv–one of the most trusted brands of CAC reader available–and OtterBox–one of the most rugged iPhone cases on the market. Fortunately, we’ve got an OtterBox uniVerse case already because the reader doesn’t come with it.
However, it does come with Sub Rosa middleware pre-installed onto the reader. And it’s was a pretty easy process getting that set up. The middleware worked for every CAC application we tested. And it works on just about every platform you can think of including:
- OWA
- DTS
- AKO
- NKO
- AF Portals
- And more!
As great as this is, there were just two things that didn’t sit too well with us.
It’s expensive.
This is much more expensive than most other CAC readers. As of writing this, it retails over $100. But if you’re looking for a premium CAC Card reader, you’re going to have to pay for it.
The reader is sold separate from the case.
This is the real kicker. The reader and case are not yet bundled together making this an even more costly choice. But depending on your phone or tablet model, these can be relatively cheap. Plus, you’ll be getting access to other OtterBox modules. We just wish that there’s a discounted bundle option.
